Sitting on two separate corners of the bench, they could not see each other. All they wanted to do was to be together but they had silenced themselves thinking they owed respect to their feelings. Ego had taken a seat between them. It sat atop the graveyard of feelings which they hadn't shared with each other. It was difficult to see through ego, and it always came. Provoked by sorrow, it edged in through the corridors of heart that were left empty by unmet expectations, and then it came to lips, leaving people silent and bitter.
People held ego close to their hearts, and for good reason. It is a necessary self-defence against people who would otherwise trample others' emotions under their metaphorical hooves. But sometimes, just sometimes, it shields people from the sight and privilege of true love and belonging.
