Best graduates in medical colleges of Pakistan go to USA, and UK. The remaining stay to serve in this system and are mocked by their comparison to those who have left the country for better prospects. I have seen this attitude in some professors. Specially one of our teachers who would demean the doctors who want to work in Pakistan by saying that 10 years form now you would be sitting on the broken chairs in Khanewal hospital while your classfellow gets fellowship in an American hospital and maybe drives a ferrari. With these insensitive jokes he is able to generate a laughter from the students who, probably don't even realize where it's hitting them. This in my opinion, is adding salt to an injury. This, is a role model inculcating inferiority complex in impressionable minds with his callous words. It's not like there are any incentives for doctors to stay in Pakistan and work. Those 'dimwits' who do, should be commended not 'ridiculed'. Yes they are poor. Yes they probably will be for a long time. Yes they may drive a santro when their classfellows abroad drive ferrari. But the trouble is that they can see it. You can see it. I can see it. Everyone who is part of health care in Pakistan knows about the non-existent benefits and meagre salaries. Working here could be a choice or the only option, but no sweeping statement should take away from the doctors who work here, the respect they deserve. That is usually the only 'incentive' they have.
