If you want to exchange. a shift/duty with someone , lets say, over weekend. Don't go and ask them 'do you have any plans for the weekend', just straight up ask them if they could cover for you. They don't need to have plans in order for them to not want to do a call that is not on their schedule. The onus of this explanation is not on them.
