I am appalled. We have more problem with Sharmeen Obaid chinnoy because she exposed the 'dark side of pakistan' than we have with the bitter reality she filmed into a story. We have more problem with Malala yousufzai being in the headlines for the wrong reasons than we have with the 'wrong reasons' themselves. We have problems with Pakistani actors 'crossing their limits' when they work abroad as if everybody who happens to be born in this place has to follow our rigid standards of modesty and propriety or else he ( read she) just loses the right to be respected. We have to confine art to, and view it through the pigeonhole of our limited vision. We have monstrous egos and great delusions about our grandeur, about our honour , our values which we think are peculiar to us. Keeping the women in our family under control , maintaining joint family systems which thrive on the compromises of its weaker members, brewing conspiracy theories in our minds for acquittal from the responsibility of our failures , brushing the real issues under the rug for the sake of 'honour' and to present a good image to the world, being angry at those who expose the truth and bring our problems to limelight. These deeds disguised as something they are not, are not things to be proud of. The only thing we can be proud of is when and if humanity is a common value for all the people. Which unfortunately is not true, specially when religious sentiments come into play. The nation is not presented in a bad light when a couple of actors cross the so called limits , it is exposed when the patriarchal mindset and the judgement calls make their way to the online social forums in front of the whole world, the 'image' of a nation is not distorted by a couple of people showcasing the real issues faced in the society in whichever way they can, it is tarnished when people have more problem with the voice against injustice than the injustice itself, the tolerance or 'peacefulness' of the religious people is not real until it extends to the people whose opinions they completely differ from.
Any glory is not a glory if humanity is not the common denominator for all our values, beliefs and actions.
