Hypocrisy is more painful than outright declaration of your loyalties. It's funny how Muslims treat Islam like it is changeable from place to place (where it fits them). The same women who cannot go without a dupatta here in Pakistan, would not wear anything close to a scarf when they are in the Western countries. I have seen many 'God-fearing', women , who were critical of all those 'wayward girls' in Pakistan who didn't cover themselves properly, go to these countries and suddenly transform. Upon asking, one such person told me in that knowledgeable way that 'there the environemnt is so different. Nobody devours you with his eyes. Everybody minds his business. Everybody dresses as he/she likes. That's why I dress as I like. And he (insert : husband) doesn't mind either'.
And this is where my irony meter broke.
These muslim women spend their whole lives convincing themselves and others of greatness of Islam and justifying the restrictions it places on women by calling uncontrollable lust a cardinal feature of man, thus absolving them of any responsibility for their own behavior. Men, in their own right have the same mentality, making their respect for women conditional with their dressing. While the concept they actually endorse is that they are merely tumors grown around their genital organs. Their behavior is only passive, and a reaction to the signals they judge a woman to be sending.
All these muslims build their lives upon shaming other people for their 'character' and 'morals'. Even if there is not spoken disapproval, they have this unmistakable feeling of superiority that is evident in how they talk about others. They justify their religion and its misogynist practices in convinced tones. Their common sense when it arises after exposure to nations and societies constructed on egalitarian principles only manifests as hypocrisy. It does not challenge their belief systems. It only serves to liberate these intellectually constipated cowards who will still support the barbarism and misogyny of Islam in theory, while enjoying a 'free hand' themselves. When a difficult question is asked, they will still jump to defend islam , excusing their own practices as a work of weak faith. They advocate taking away of the same rights for other women by deeming their ideology immune from criticism and reform.
Alas for others, Not everyone has the liberty to be a hypocrite.
