The age groups we have left are still doing what they were doing when we were a part of them. In the midday children are still thinking about what to buy with their lunch money , they still see the world as an extension of their school, they still write homework in their diaries , have favourite bench mates , keep extra pencils, carry water bottles and eagerly wait for summer vacation around this time of year. The teenagers are still catching butterflies in their stomach , they still have crushes , love is still being discovered in classrooms and academies where the stress to perform well is as high as ever, they are still learning tricks to ace their exams , and texting late into the night, they still use those registers with ring binders and a lot of markers . The girls are beginning to harness the power in their looks , the world is rolling under their feet , every new song which admires the girl is for them , every love song underlines the unsaid between them and the boy who sits behind them on purpose.
The young are buying prospectus for their desired college . Some are entering the medical school for the first time with a perfectly ironed lab coat on the very first day. Some are becoming engineers, others fashion designers, lawyers , pharmacists...
We are slowly being erased from the cycle of life. Every day we wake up , we are one day closer to the day we won't be here and one day farther from those days when the whole world felt to be (obliviously) ours.
The children remain , the teenagers remain. It's we who detach from a part of ourselves and move on.
Let's remember the taste of thrill when the school bell rang and we picked our bags for home , the feeling of seeing someone you like without ever saying anything because romance is the domain between felt and said, the certainty of knowing you are somewhere for the next five years or so, the performances in the college events where we were given concession points for not being mature enough. Our liberties are slowly replaced with responsibilities. We fade into irrelevance for one group after another until we are no more.
(Maybe we can let the romance stay, find the suitable playmates and never grow old at heart. Or we may decide to stay curious forever , hopeful forever and in doing that we will grow wiser. This is the only kind of growing which redeems the disadvantages of aging)
